Special Events

Many different types of special events keep the UW Madison Police Department busy.  These events include Badger Sporting events such as football, basketball, and hockey.

Staffing an event, such as Badger Football at Camp Randall Stadium is a large undertaking.  A lot of coordination takes place to insure the safety of 81,000 fans.  An average of 6 – 7 Badger home games take place each year.  Besides the officers from UW Madison Police Department that staff the Badger Football games, 16 other law enforcement agencies assist us with policing the event.  WIAA Boy’s State Football Championships are held at Camp Randall each year in the month of November and also require planning and staffing by UWPD.

The Kohl Center seats 17,500 for basketball and 15,500 for hockey.  Approximately 60 events occur for Men’s and Women’s Badger Basketball and Men’s Hockey.  WIAA State Boy’s and Girl’s Basketball and WIAA Individual Wrestling also takes place at the Kohl Center.  The Kohl Center also hosts numerous other events such as concerts, commencements, (both University and High School), etc.  All of these events take extensive planning and are staffed by police officers.  The Kohl Center events that require staffing by UW Madison Police is approximately 100 events each year.

The campus has numerous other special events that are held each year.  Some of the annual events are; Ironman Triathlon Competition, Madison Marathon, Crazy Legs Marathon, Kites on Ice, and All Campus Party.  Other events happen throughout the year that are not an annual event, such as MTV’s Rock the Vote.  The Memorial Union has numerous concerts and bands that play inside the Memorial Union and on the Union Terrace that require staffing by police.  UW Madison Police also are actively involved with political events (political candidates), and dignitary visits to the University.

There are also special events that happen off of campus that UW Madison Police are involved with.  An example of this is the Mifflin Street Block Party and Rhythm and Booms.
