Detailed Descriptions of POP Projects

Bike Theft Reduction-PO Deering

The department is using a GPS System with bait bikes in order to reduce the number of bike thefts on campus.

Prostitution in the Arboretum-PO Nielsen

Identifying reasons prostitutes are using the arboretum for illegal activities and stopping their usage.

Most Vulnerable Auditoriums-Lt. Holen, PO Ogren, SO Slater

Identifying the ten largest auditoriums on campus and identifying active shooter contingencies and considerations for each auditorium.

Scrap Metal Thefts-Lt. Holen, Sgt. Silbernagel, PO Pearce

Finding ways to stop scrap metal thefts occurring at University buildings and properties.

Crosswalk Safety-PO Gruber

The crosswalk initiative involves targeting concentrated pedestrian and motor vehicle zones (800 Langdon, Frances/Dayton, Dayton/Engineering, Bascom, Observatory/N. Charter, 600 Highland) to improve personal safety and to educate and cite violators.

Reduction of stuck semi’s in Park Circle-PO Glejf

Many semi drivers are missing the turn for 151 at West Washington & Park.  They end up getting stuck at the dead end at Park Circle.  This project involves getting better signage to avoid semi’s getting stuck and needing police assistance to stop traffic so they can back up.

Campus Wide Moped Safety and Security Initiative-PO Radtke and PO VandenBogart

Studies and influences the operation of mopeds on campus based on statistics that reveal the increase in moped drivers who are non-compliant with traffic laws.

Unauthorized persons sleeping in Social Work Basement-PO Radtke

After the fact it was learned that someone was possibly using the basement of Social Work for their home for the winter of 07-08.  The basement utility room was open for anyone to have access.  There was numerous garbage lying around, including items such as beer cans, food wrappers, playing cards, newspapers, etc.  It was determined that the utility room should not be open for everyone to have access.  Physical Plant installed a gated locked door at the bottom of the stairs which secures the basement.  Physical Plant, the building manager, and security are the only ones that should have keys to the utility room.  This project is complete.

Malicious Vandalism in Sterling Hall-PO Radtke

Over the summer of 2008 Sterling was partly an abandoned building, and received cases of malicious vandalism.  UWPD staff met with the building manager, those still working in the building, and staff from FP&M.  The building hours were shortened, communication lines were opened with everyone, extra patrols were conducted, and we are continuing to work with FP&M in preparing for the renovations.  So far for fall of 2008 the vandalism has stopped and in October most of the building will be turned over to the construction company for renovations.

Business Hours Posted on Building-Sgt. Silbernagel, PO Radtke, PO Pearce, PO Laundrie, SO Bablitch, SO Ward, SO Avila

The goal is to encourage all building managers of academic buildings on campus to agree to post "business hours" (not locking hours) at the main entrances of their buildings. The primary intent of this project is to improve the safety and security of the people and property on the UW Campus and specifically inside UW buildings. We expect the postings to have a deterrent effect just as "no trespassing" signs on any other property are intended to accomplish. The signs are just one more level of protection or a barrier that is put in place to try to keep out people who do not belong there.

Worthless Checks-PO Gruber

There have been multiple cases of worthless checks at the UW Hospital. The goal is to pass a "no check acceptance" policy to stop this problem.

Vehicles Stopping/Standing/Parking in Roadway-PO Mars

Find a solution to vehicles stopping/standing/parking in the roadway.

Reduction of False Security Alarms at Education Sciences-PO McCaughtry, SO Bablitch, Sec Supv Gruber, Sec Supv Pasha, Lt. Holen

There has been an increase in false intrusion alarms at the Educational Sciences building recently.  The group is identifying the cause of the alarms and will develop strategies to reduce them.
