Infrastructure and Physical Security

The UW Police Department Planning and Development Division has a sub-unit whose task is infrastructure and physical security. This unit helps identify what resources are most critical to the university in order to function. Examples of this could be facilities, equipment, information technology, or people. Often the easiest way to safeguard a resource is basic physical security. Physical Security is a physical, or tangible, barrier that protects against theft, loss, or vandalism. It can be as advanced as Access Control measures using Biometrics and Closed Circuit Television or as simple as locking a door.

The Infrastructure and Physical Security Unit is comprised of physical security and access control professionals whose duties include security surveys, crime prevention, as well as risk assessment. There are both sworn police officers and non-sworn security officers in this unit. They work closely with FP&M, UW Safety, and the Physical Plant to develop plans and guidelines for security and access control systems for the university.
