Chazen Museum Security

The Chazen Museum of Art is a cultural facility of the University of Wisconsin, established for the support and enrichment of the University’s educational programs. The museum is a department of the College of Letters and Science. It functions as a facility for the university art collections, exhibitions sponsored by the Chazen Museum of Art, and all other activities basic to an art museum, including: programs, lectures, symposia, and seminars related to the visual arts, Art History Department offices and classes, and the Kohler Art Reference Library.

Security continues to be an important component of the general operations of the Chazen Museum of Art. Security Officers care for the safety and comfort of visitors, students and staff, and fulfill their obligation to protect the facility and art work. This requires them to wear many different hats. They serve as public relations and information officers beyond monitoring the activities within the galleries, the art storage areas and the entire museum. They also help educate visitors, students and staff in proper museum etiquette. Security officers also serve as a liaison between the UW-Madison Police Department and the museum, assuring continuing compliance with various rules and regulations needed to maintain the integrity of the museum’s security.

Security officers  and museum staff attend a museum security training course.   Topics include fire and emergency responses, authority and jurisdiction, posts and patrols, access controls, emergency art handling, parcel control and public relations.
