The UW Police Bike Unit was created in 1992,
after research and acquiring bikes and equipment. Our first two bikes were
loaned to us buy the owner of a local bike shop. We have since added more bikes
to our fleet and have established a rotation plan to replace older bikes as
required.
Members of the bike unit are required to attend a 32 hour Police Cyclist course. Our department has two nationally certified as Police Cycling Instructors, who have been providing training for police officers through out Wisconsin and the Midwest.
Job assignments for the bike unit cover a
wide range of activities. During warmer months, bike officers patrol the east
campus area. This area has our three largest residence halls, and the largest
number of liquor establishments, in a concentrated area. Bike officers remain
busy enforcing alcohol laws as has well as responding to disturbance calls.
Officers on the unit are assigned a beat, like their counterparts in squads. In
addition to patrol assignments, they are assigned to Wisconsin Badger home
football games and other large events on campus.
The UW Police Bike Patrol Team is a well received, highly motivated member of the patrol function of the UW Police department and will remain so for many years to come
